Behind-the-Scenes

#BTSwithChasingAutumn

Can I just start with gushing about the incredible people we get to work with?

Julie B is Medicine Hat’s premier Make-Up Artist. She not only runs her own shop downtown, but she’s also a Make-Up instructor and teaches for Paramita Make-up Academy where she proudly preaches the good ol' hastag mantra of #communitynotcompetition. She’s incredible at what she does, and she is one of the most kind people you will ever meet. She works with Becca Cosmetics primarily, and has a TON of them for sale in her shop. (She even offers make-up lessons for those of us less skilled folk like myself!) Follow her on Instagram at @juliebmakeup

Sarah H & Mandy O from Chamber’s Salon, are the type of ladies you want at your shoot, and in your LIFE. They’re so complimentary, super social, and hilarious t’boot. Sarah is THE fastest hair stylist I’ve EVER met in my life. She doesn’t sacrifice quality either-she’s just THAT GOOD. She comes up with an idea, and BAM. There it is in all it’s glory. Its AMAZING and we always have her on hand during the shoot process to touch up and change looks. Mandy isn’t as fast as Sarah...haha...(thats not to say her work isn't ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE). It is 100% because Mandy’s everyone’s biggest fan-she’s doing hair, she’s dancing to music, and she’s cheering everyone on and bringing the laughter-and we love her for it.  Feel free to follow their work at @chamberssalon

The MODELS: Lennon & Haley were two of our 2015 Graduates who had booked their photos with us. While shooting their Grad Shots, we just clicked! When we looked at the images later, we were blown away by how natural, and stunning these two ladies were. We for sure knew that we wanted to do a “Vintage/Classic” style with Lennon, she has such stunning, timeless features and we wanted to emphasize that. And Haley-we actually weren’t sure-we just knew we wanted to do something with this girl! When we shot her last year she had one dread in her hair peeking out from time to time in the shots, and her freckles were begging to be photographed…so we decided to run with it. Bohemian/Coachella/Festival Style was where we ran. And boy did she ever rock it!!

Michelle Gall is someone who excels at what she does. This woman LIVES her passion. Design and conceptual art has a NEED for this gal. She is overflowing with creativity and we cannot wait to work with her in the future. For this shoot, she was so helpful in responding to my call out for “vintage dresses anyone?” on a local Facebook Group. I laughed when Michelle said she just pulled them all from her closet...then she showed up to deliver them to me, and I was shocked...she looked like she’d just walked out of a vintage magazine shoot herself! She lent me a few of the dresses/tops you’ll see in upcoming photos of Lennon. Check her facebook out here: Diva Dolls Facebook

Here’s some images of the shoot from behind the scenes, and in a future post you’ll see some of the final product! I’m so excited to share them with you! We are beyond excited to be able to work with such talented people here in our own city. (Michelle's an honorary local.)

This is the light setup we used for Haley's (non-coloured shots). The back two lights were pointed towards her to create a nice rim/fill and then we used a grid on the beauty dish for one, and barn doors for the other to keep the light out of the lens. Then we used our Octobox for our main light, and feathered it on her so it wasn't so harsh.

This is what our living room looks like for a few days before we have a big shoot. When you don't own a studio space the tear down and set up is something you get used to! Testing light set ups and prepping for the shoot!

We tend to bring too much to every shoot we go to. But having lots of items to grab from make for a lot of fun decisions! We usually tell the models, and Hair and Makeup what we're aiming for, and everyone raids their closets. I hit up Value Village from time to time and I think I've become a professional VV Shopper. At home we have one closet for our clothes, and one for our shoots. Good times!

We shot tethered this time, which made it soooo fun for everyone to see the images straight from camera. Plus it was much easier for us to finesse the way the final images were going to look. Seeing images on screen vs the tiny LCD made a huge difference in the quality of image we were able to get straight out of camera. (Here's Sarah & Matt in awe of how awesome Lennon looks..haha!)
