This wedding has gone viral - throughout news stations, and blogging lists across the globe - for good reason! If you ever wanted to have a Canadian wedding experience, a beaver sabotaging it by knocking the power out ranks pretty high!
Kim & Calum had their wedding at the beautiful Cypress Hills Resort in Southern Saskatchewan. They decided to do a first look with their pup before tying the knot, and it was a great way to spend a few moments together before the whirlwind of the day took over.
The ceremony went wonderfully (and had power!), then it was off to family photos. As we were finishing up family photos, and getting started on wedding party portraits the news was delivered. Power was out across Southern Sask, and most likely would be out for the whole event. We learned later that a beaver near Gull Lake had mistaken a power pole for a much needed log for its dam.
Kim & Calum took this news like champs! They shrugged, and had a little chuckle, but put complete confidence in the staff to make it work. What do you do? You press on!
Dinner was moved up a bit to ensure everyone could see what they were eating by window light. The Resort staff worked tirelessly to ensure they had generators going for the DJ's sound system, and a few string lights around the dance floor. There were lamps running with extension cords through the hallways and battery powered LED's placed in the washrooms. Candles were lit on each of the tables, and honestly, it created a nice little cozy atmosphere amongst the rustic backdrop of the Cypress Hills (and gave these two a hilarious story to remember for years to come).
For us as photographers, the only issue was attempting to focus in the dimly lit room, but it didn't stop us from capturing some awesome photos of this day, we just had to work a little harder for it! We always bring our own lighting equipment, and are reliant on battery packs if need be, so the power outage didn't make too much of a difference for us.
Most would think something like a power outage would've put quite a damper on the day; it didn't at all, and that was 100% because of how Kim & Calum handled it. They could have chosen to let it affect the rest of their afternoon shoot with us, but instead they took it in stride and laughed about how no wedding day is ever perfect, and how they'll have a story to tell (this was before we even knew it was a hilarious beaver)! We had a blast with their wedding party, and the power outage didn't even get mentioned all afternoon. They were so focused on having a good time, and enjoying their day that it simply didn't matter. We had some great chats in the car with them while driving between locations, about marriage and discovering each other's love languages. These two are absolute GEMS and care so deeply for one another. We were honoured to capture their day and be reminded of what is TRULY important.
A feisty beaver is no match for these two.
Kim & Calum, thank you for being you. You two are incredible people who know how to find joy in whatever life hands you. We wish you all the best in your marriage and life together.
Amanda (& Matt)
P.S. Calum: your dance moves = incredible.
